von Trapp Brewing

“A Little Bit of Austria and a lot of Vermont” is the motto for the Trapp Family Lodge. The Brewery and Bierhall lives up to that with traditional European beers and food. Having lived in Stowe since 1979, I have known Johannes and Sam von Trapp for a while. I worked at the Trapp Family Lodge for a few years and greatly appreciated how they took care of employees. I know that creating a Brewery has been one of Johannes dreams. That dream became a reality in the spring of 2010 when von Trapp Brewing opened in the former Deli Bakery. In 2015 the current facility opened which is 30,000 sq. ft. and can produce 50,000 barrels of beer annually. That makes them one of the biggest if not the biggest brewery in the state.

The Trapp Bierhall makes lager style beers, which is the traditional style you find in Germany and Austria. Lager means ‘to store’ in German, which translates to a beer that takes about three times as long to ferment. So instead of a two week turn around with an ale, lagers take five to six weeks. The beer is easy to drink and smooth. With the current craze around hops, which lagers are not known for, they have been experimenting and have created an IPL (India Pale Lager) and a double IPL. Really, really good beer!

In addition to great beer, the Bierhall offers great traditional Austrian food. You’ll find Chicken Schnitzel, Bratwurst, Knockwurst, salads, pretzels, grass fed beef sliders and more! They serve a Wurst Platter that has a little of everything. Always a hit on the tour and a great spot to get appetizers! Private tours will often start off with lunch at the Bierhall and then off to tour more breweries!
